The Memory Chip That Wants Out of the Lab
MRAM has spent years in that deeply annoying category of technology: always promising, rarely deployed, constantly accompanied by a guy in a blazer saying this is the year everything changes.
This time, I think the guy in the blazer might actually have a point.
In April, SNIA launched the MRAM Alliance SIG, a new industry group meant to pull together foundries, chip makers, equipment vendors, and system companies around magnetoresistive RAM. Normally I would file that under conference-badge theater. But in semiconductors, boring coordination work is often the tell that something has graduated from science project to product.
And the pitch is not vapor anymore. According to EE Times, STT-MRAM is already established at TSMC, Samsung, UMC, and GlobalFoundries. MRAM Alliance co-chair Jean-Pierre Nozières said the window is open because MRAM is simply more mature right now than alternatives like ReRAM or FeRAM. That tracks. The industry is not forming a SIG because it enjoys committee work. It is forming one because enough people think there is money on the table.
There is, at least potentially, a lot of it. Tom Coughlin wrote in Forbes that new memory technologies could represent a $171 billion market by 2035, with MRAM positioned to displace chunks of NOR flash, some SRAM, and maybe more over time. That does not mean DRAM is about to get shoved into a locker and robbed of its lunch money. It means old assumptions about where volatile and non-volatile memory belong are starting to crack.
The interesting part is where MRAM is already showing up.
In cars, NXP’s CoreRide Z248 zonal reference system is built on an S32K5 microcontroller with advanced MRAM, which NXP says enables fast over-the-air updates throughout a vehicle’s life. That is a practical, unsexy, extremely important use case. Carmakers do not care whether your memory technology won a research award. They care whether software updates finish quickly and the car does not turn into an expensive driveway ornament.
In space, the case is even stronger. NHanced Semiconductors told EE Times it chose Avalanche Technology’s MRAM for satellite and defense FPGA packages because flash lacked the needed radiation hardness and other options failed on density or temperature tolerance. Avalanche said its current parts are in the hundreds of megabits, with gigabits on the horizon, and that space versions use roughly 3× the memory overhead for error correction and reliability logic. Space is where bad memory goes to die very far from customer support.
There is still one awkward issue: magnets. Because MRAM stores data magnetically, people worry about magnetic immunity, especially in consumer devices and wearables. That is not being hand-waved away. IEEE P3465 is working on a formal MRAM magnetic immunity testing standard, and the new alliance is explicitly treating the topic as a real ecosystem problem instead of PR confetti.
That is why I think this is worth watching. The real sign of maturity is not a benchmark or a keynote. It is when a technology starts attracting foundry support, standards work, automotive adoption, and space-grade packaging at the same time.
MRAM may never become the one universal memory to rule them all. Frankly, that kind of story usually ends with somebody asking for another funding round. But it does look like one of the few “next-gen memory” ideas that has finally earned an actual job.
