The Corpse of 3D Vision Just Coughed
Every few years, some extinct piece of PC nonsense lurches out of the landfill and reminds you that maybe the weirdos were onto something. This week’s contestant is wiz3D, an open-source project trying to resurrect stereoscopic 3D gaming on modern systems.

The gimmick here is better than nostalgia bait. The wiz3D repo describes it as a universal stereoscopic 3D wrapper for DirectX 7 through 11 and OpenGL, based on the old iZ3D codebase. Instead of relying on the original project’s kernel-level driver tricks, wiz3D swaps that mess for a proxy DLL loader and aims to get old AMD HD3D and Nvidia 3D Vision paths working again on current hardware and software stacks. That is exactly the kind of deranged maintenance work I respect: not “let’s remake the past,” but “let’s pry the useful bits out of it and cut away the cursed organs.”
The backstory is gloriously early-2000s. iZ3D started as a stereoscopic monitor and driver company, shipped its 22-inch 3D monitor in 2007, expanded its drivers to support all major 3D outputs in December 2008, discontinued monitor production in 2010, and shut down in 2012. According to the wiz3D README, the original developers later open-sourced the code under the MIT license, which is why this resurrection stunt is even possible. Score one for not taking your toys to the grave.
And this is not just a repo full of vibes and TODOs. The current wiz3D README says DirectX 9 is mostly working, DirectX 8 is partially working, DirectX 7 is in progress, and OpenGL quad-buffer stereo is also under active work. On the game side, the compatibility list already includes stuff like Left 4 Dead 2, Hitman: Absolution, Tomb Raider (2013), Sleeping Dogs, Sniper Elite 4, and several other relics from the era when every graphics feature needed a capital letter and a marketing deck.
That matters because most modern attempts at “retro preservation” stop at making the game launch. Fine. Great. Gold star. But a whole layer of PC history vanishes if you ignore the bizarre hardware features and vendor-specific rendering paths that surrounded those games. Stereoscopic 3D on PC was absolutely a circus, but it was a real circus, with real engineering in it. AMD had HD3D. Nvidia had 3D Vision. Game menus had dedicated stereo toggles. People tolerated active-shutter glasses because gamers will endure almost any humiliation if you promise more immersion.
My take is simple: this is exactly the kind of open-source preservation project the industry is too lazy to fund and too happy to benefit from later. Big vendors love talking about the future, then quietly abandon every weird side road they used to sell as destiny. Meanwhile some maniac with a GitHub account shows up years later and does the janitorial work.
Will stereoscopic 3D gaming become mainstream again? Of course not. Be serious. The public barely wants to wear headphones consistently, and you think they’re lining up for glasses plus shader quirks plus config XML? But that is not the point. The point is that old capabilities should not disappear just because the companies attached to them got bored.
wiz3D is fascinating precisely because it is small, specific, and unashamedly nerdy. It is not trying to “disrupt” anything. It is just proving, once again, that abandoned tech has a longer half-life than the executives who buried it.
