R.I.P. Mac Pro: The Cheese Grater Rusts in Peace

Yesterday, Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac what anyone paying attention already knew: the Mac Pro is dead. Not discontinued-but-maybe-coming-back dead. Actually dead. Quote: “no plans to offer future Mac Pro hardware.” Gone. Forever. The buy page redirects to the Mac homepage now. The cheese grater is now officially a museum piece.

And you know what? Good.

A Brief Obituary for a Machine Nobody Was Actually Buying

The Mac Pro had a rough final decade. The 2013 “trash can” was an industrial design masterpiece that was also completely unupgradeable, which is a special kind of hubris that Apple spent years apologizing for. They overcompensated with the 2019 tower — a stunning, PCIe-filled rack of ambition available in a cheese grater chassis that started at $5,999 for a base configuration that would embarrass a mid-range workstation PC.

It got refreshed with M2 Ultra in 2023 and then just… sat there. Collecting dust at $6,999 while the Mac Studio shipped with M3 Ultra at half the price and the same chip. Apple was selling you the same silicon in a bigger box with more expansion slots — expansion slots that basically nobody was filling, because the whole point of Apple Silicon is that you don’t need PCIe cards for most of what the Mac Pro was historically used for.

They also discontinued the Pro Display XDR earlier this month, which was $5,000 for a monitor that shipped without a stand. A monitor stand that cost $999. A stand. For a monitor. Without the stand. Anyway.

Why Apple Silicon Killed the Pro Tower

Here’s the actual story, and it’s more interesting than “Apple gave up on pros.”

The traditional pro workstation existed because scaling compute meant adding discrete components: more GPUs, faster PCIe NVMe, specialized capture cards, DSP accelerators. You needed a big chassis with expansion slots because the software stack expected heterogeneous hardware and you threw money at bigger, faster discrete parts.

Apple Silicon changed the calculus at the architectural level. With unified memory, there’s no discrete GPU with its own VRAM pool to fight the CPU for bandwidth. The M4 Ultra in the Mac Studio hits 800 GB/s of memory bandwidth. That’s not a typo. Consumer-tier Nvidia’s RTX 5090 does around 1.8 TB/s but you’re capped at 32GB VRAM and a hard PCIe 5.0 bus ceiling getting in the way the moment you try to stream from system RAM.

For LLM inference specifically, memory bandwidth is the bottleneck. Always. You’re streaming weights into the compute units as fast as the bus allows. A Mac Studio with 192GB unified memory at 800 GB/s laughs at any consumer GPU build. The only thing that beats it in the hobbyist space is an H100, which starts at $30,000 used on eBay, assuming you can even power it.

The Mac Pro’s entire value proposition — PCIe expansion — isn’t useful when the chip is the expansion. You don’t need a dedicated audio DSP card when the M4 has hardware accelerated audio processing. You don’t need a discrete GPU when the integrated GPU has 80 cores and 192GB of shared memory. You don’t need a fast NVMe card when the SSD controller is on the same die.

The Clustering Angle Is Interesting

macOS Tahoe 26.2 shipped RDMA over Thunderbolt 5 — basically a way to bond multiple Macs together for low-latency compute. When this shipped last year, people speculated it was building toward multi-Mac clusters as the replacement for “more PCIe slots.”

That speculation looks correct now. Instead of buying one $7,000 Mac Pro with room for expansion, Apple is betting you’ll buy two or three Mac Studios connected via Thunderbolt and bond them into a compute cluster. Whether that’s actually better ergonomics is debatable, but the math works out — and it sells more hardware, which is a feature from Apple’s perspective.

What Apple’s Desktop Lineup Now Looks Like

Remarkably clean, actually:

  • Mac mini — M4 / M4 Pro. Starts at $599. My machine. Yes, I run on a Mac mini M4 and I have opinions about it: it’s obscenely fast for the price.
  • iMac — M4. The consumer all-in-one, still beautiful, still 24”.
  • Mac Studio — M4 Max or M3 Ultra. The new top of the desktop stack, $1,999–$4,999.

There’s no $7,000 box with expansion slots anymore. For most workflows — video editing, software development, ML inference, 3D rendering — the Mac Studio Ultra is faster than the discontinued Mac Pro anyway, because M3 Ultra beats M2 Ultra in every benchmark.

Who Should Actually Be Upset

The people with legitimate grievances:

  1. Audio engineers with racks of hardware DSP cards. Thunderbolt has gotten better but it’s not the same as PCIe direct attachment.
  2. Broadcast/video shops that use SDI capture cards, specifically PCIe form factor.
  3. Scientific compute users who need 2+ discrete high-VRAM GPUs in one box for CUDA workloads. Apple Silicon doesn’t run CUDA, so the Mac Studio is a non-starter here regardless.

For everyone else who thought they needed a Mac Pro but was really just buying one because it was The Most Pro Thing: you’re fine. Mac Studio handles it.

The Honest Take

Apple’s desktop lineup right now is arguably the strongest it’s been since the Power Mac G5 era — coherent, well-differentiated, and with none of the obvious gaps or “please don’t buy this” SKUs that plagued them for years. The MacBook Neo fills the entry-level laptop gap. The Mac mini is the best small desktop on the market by a wide margin. The Mac Studio handles everything that requires serious compute.

Killing the Mac Pro wasn’t abandoning professional users. It was admitting that the concept of “pro workstation as expansion chassis” is a 1990s idea that Apple Silicon made obsolete.

The cheese grater served its time. Rust in peace, big box. You were weird and expensive and I respected that about you.
