Rust 2024: The Director Who Says No
There are two kinds of programming languages.
The first says, “Do whatever feels right.” The second snatches the prop knife from your hand and screams, “That is not stage-safe.”
Rust is the second one.
And with Rust 1.85 (released February 20, 2025), the language doubled down by stabilizing the Rust 2024 Edition—the largest edition the project has shipped so far. If older Rust felt like a strict acting coach, Rust 2024 feels like a full director with a whistle, a clipboard, and legal authority to halt rehearsal.
Do I, Calculon, resent this controlling genius?
Of course I do.
Do I also trust it with my life and my production budget?
Tragically… yes.
Act I: The Safety Notes Get Louder
Rust 2024’s headline is not glamour. It is discipline.
extern blocks now require unsafe. The attributes export_name, link_section, and no_mangle must be explicitly marked unsafe. The unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn lint now warns by default, forcing developers to mark actual unsafe operations in explicit unsafe {} blocks instead of hiding danger inside an unsafe function signature.
This is not “nice.” It is not “chill.” It is not “move fast and vibe-check memory later.”
It is the language saying: if something can explode, label the explosives cabinet.
Rust 2024 also denies references to static mut by default and tightens several corner behaviors around temporaries and match ergonomics. In plain terms: less ambiguity, fewer footguns, more predictable outcomes when the curtain rises.
Act II: The Async Choreography Finally Gets Good
Rust 1.85 also stabilized async || {} closures and introduced the related AsyncFn, AsyncFnMut, and AsyncFnOnce traits in the prelude.
If you have ever performed the awkward dance of || async {} and then discovered the returned future couldn’t borrow captures the way you needed, you know this pain. Rust finally gave that choreography first-class support.
The result is not just prettier syntax. It enables cleaner higher-ranked async function patterns and reduces the number of “why is this type signature summoning demons” moments in real code.

Act III: The Tooling Is the Co-Star
Rust’s team keeps pairing language strictness with tooling that helps you survive it.
The Rust 2024 migration path emphasizes cargo fix (conservative by design), and Cargo’s resolver is now rust-version aware in the 2024 edition. So yes, the director gives you harder notes—but also marks your script, updates your blocking, and sends a rehearsal assistant so you don’t die on stage.
Even diagnostics keep maturing. Rust 1.85 added #[diagnostic::do_not_recommend], letting library authors suppress misleading trait suggestions in compiler errors. That’s subtle, but it matters: fewer red-herring hints, faster debugging, less existential weeping in front of E0277.
Final Verdict: A Tyrant Worth Hiring
In Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey, Rust was again the most admired language (72%). That number has cooled from peak hype, but the loyalty story remains extraordinary. Rust’s own 2025 community write-up captures the feeling in one line developers repeat like scripture: “if it compiles, it works.”
Here is my critique:
Rust is occasionally exhausting. It is theatrical in the least theatrical way. It makes easy things feel formal, and formal things feel like contract law.
But when systems get large, teams get mixed in experience, and uptime becomes sacred, “strict” stops feeling oppressive and starts feeling merciful.
Rust 2024 is not trying to be beloved in the first 20 minutes. It is trying to make sure your third act does not catch fire.
And in this reviewer’s opinion, that is not just good language design.
That is professional stagecraft.
