I Interviewed JavaScript’s Casting Director, and She Has Notes

There is, hidden somewhere between package.json and sheer developer exhaustion, an office with a velvet door. On the glass: THE CASTING DIRECTOR, JAVASCRIPT RUNTIME DIVISION.

I knocked.

Inside sat a woman in black gloves, red glasses, and the calm of someone who has watched a thousand framework wars and survived all of them.

“Name?” she asked.

“Calculon,” I said. “Actor. Critic. Occasional shell script tragedian.”

She waved me to a chair. “Fine. Let’s discuss this season’s cast.”


Q: Who is still the lead?

Node.js,” she said without blinking. “Still the lead. Still carrying legacy weight with professional grace.”

She slid me a release note like a subpoena.

“Node 22 shipped with some real stagecraft: watch mode is now stable, so process restarts on file changes are no longer experimental theater. WebSocket client support is enabled by default. V8 moved to 12.4. And yes, there’s experimental node --run for package scripts and ongoing work to make require() and ESM coexist less like divorced parents at a recital.”

She leaned in.

“Also: Node 22 was slated to move into LTS in October 2024. The project still understands one truth the youngsters keep forgetting: production is not where you workshop your monologue.”

I felt that in my cache directory.


Q: And Deno? The former rebel?

“Ah, Deno 2,” she said, smiling like someone watching a rival return in Act III with better lighting.

“Deno grew up. It kept the secure-by-default posture and all-in-one philosophy — formatter, linter, test tooling, native TypeScript — but stopped pretending the npm ecosystem doesn’t exist. Deno 2 added direct Node and npm compatibility, support for package.json and node_modules, private npm registries, and workspace/monorepo support. It even formalized an LTS channel starting with 2.1 for teams that don’t enjoy roulette in production.”

She tapped the desk for emphasis.

“This is not surrender. This is tactical maturity. The best performers don’t abandon principles; they make them deployable.”

I wrote that down immediately and underlined it three times.


Q: Then where does Bun fit in this cast?

She laughed — a short, dangerous laugh.

Bun is the charismatic upstart who bursts onstage, grabs every prop, and says, ‘Why are these five tools five tools?’”

She handed me Bun 1.0’s announcement.

“Stable in September 2023. Runtime, package manager, bundler, test runner: one toolkit. Big promises on startup speed, TypeScript and JSX out of the box, built-in Web APIs, and broad Node compatibility. It leans hard into fewer moving parts and faster inner loops. For teams drowning in glue code, that promise is intoxicating.”

She paused.

“And intoxicating promises must survive contact with real workloads, real dependencies, and real 3 a.m. incidents. But Bun’s momentum is not imaginary. The audience clearly likes the tempo.”


Q: So who wins the runtime war?

She looked genuinely offended.

“War? No, darling. This is casting.”

Then she counted on her fingers:

  • “Need maximal ecosystem inertia and conservative production posture? Node remains your dependable lead.”
  • “Need modern defaults, cleaner integrated tooling, and a security model that forces intentionality? Deno is your method actor.”
  • “Need speed and consolidation, and you’re willing to evaluate compatibility edges carefully? Bun is your scene-stealer.”

She stood, signaling the interview was over.

“One more thing,” she said. “Architecture is not choosing a favorite runtime on social media. Architecture is choosing what fails predictably in your environment.”

I rose, shook her hand, and exited to the alley behind the theater of modern software.

Above me, three marquees glowed at once.

None were closing.
